Kelp Powder (Atlantic)
Kelp Powder (Atlantic)
Scientific Name: Ascophyllum nodosum
Preparation: Powder
Place of Origin: Canada
Harvest Method: Wildcrafted
Although commercially referred to as kelp, Ascophyllum nodosum is a type of large brown seaweed that grows abundantly on both coasts of the northern Atlantic Ocean. Its long fronds attach to rocks along the shoreline and use swollen, egg-shaped air bladders to float to the surface. Because of these adaptations, A. nodosum is commonly called rockweed or egg wrack.
With access to all of the nutrition in the ocean, rockweed is an excellent source of minerals, especially iodine, as well as vitamins, fatty acids and bioactive compounds (like alginic acid and fucoidan). Rockweed is widely used as a vegan nutritional supplement for humans, horses and pets as well as a natural fertilizer for plants.
The light green powder has a salty aroma and taste and is often added to green drinks, smoothies and soups or encapsulated as a dietary supplement. Kelp powder may also be used to make nourishing soaps and bath products.
Kelp should not be used by anyone allergic to fish or shellfish.
