The kava kava plant (Piper methysticum) has been cultivated in the Pacific Islands for thousands of years. A culturally and religiously significant plant, the roots were originally used to make a drink reserved for royalty and honored guests.

Kava kava is related to black pepper (P. nigrum) and has strongly aromatic roots that are harvested after three to four years of growth. The active compounds in kava kava root powder, kavalactones, have a sedative effect and are used in herbal medicine to relieve tension, anxiety and insomnia.

Typically kava kava root powder is prepared as a tea or infusion and combined with milk, coconut milk, cacao and/or fruit juices.
