Angelica Root C/S

Angelica is an ancient herb from northern Europe and Asia that was once used in pagan rituals and worn for protection against evil spirits, illness, and witchcraft. When Christianity was introduced, angelica became associated with several archangels; and according to legend, an angel presented the “angelic herb” to a monk in his dream as the cure for the plague. Angelica is still used for spiritual work.

In the same botanical family as fennel and celery, angelica is a statuesque biennial with a warm and inviting aroma popular in perfumes. Its roots have a complex flavor that is earthy, sweet, and slightly bitter. Culinarily, angelica roots were commonly made into preserves and used for flavoring liqueurs like Benedictine, Chartreuse, and Dubonnet.

Once a staple in folk medicine, angelica root is now primarily used as an expectorant for respiratory conditions and as a digestive aid. The roots are also thought to have anti-inflammatory properties helpful in cases of poor circulation. Angelica does contain compounds known as psoralens that, when ingested, cause photosensitivity.

Although related, European angelica (A. archangelica) should not be confused with Chinese angelica (A. sinensis), which is primarily used as a gynecological remedy.
