Astragalus Root C/S

One of the most important herbs in Chinese medicine, astragalus root is a “strengthener of qi” used to make the body’s natural defenses stronger. In Western medicine, the herb is an adaptogen that helps strengthen all body systems, especially the immune system.

Traditionally, astragalus root is only used for a few weeks during an illness. Studies show that it improves the function of white blood cells and boosting immunity. Herbal healers recommend astragalus root as an herbal tonic to promote heart health and treat respiratory infections.

Astragalus roots — called huang qi, meaning "yellow leader," in Chinese — are thick and fibrous with a dark brown skin and yellowish core. Growers peel and dry the carrot-like roots, then cut them into slices. The dried, chopped roots are often used for herbal teas or simmered in medicinal soups where the mildly sweet, licorice-like flavor does not affect the dish.
