Witch Hazel Bark C/S

Witch Hazel Bark C/S
Common witch hazel (H. virginiana) is prized for its astringent and antiseptic properties. The small, shrubby tree is a North American native, perhaps most recognized by its thread-like yellow flowers that burst into bloom after its leaves drop in autumn.
Native Americans were the first to use the bark, twigs, and leaves of witch hazel in teas and poultices. The abundance of tannins throughout the plant have a drying, astringent effect that prevents inflammation and promotes healing for a variety of skin conditions, including minor cuts, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, and eczema.
Distilled, alcohol-based witch hazel water is readily available today, making it one of the most widely used healing herbs in the United States. Many contemporary herbalists prefer to make stronger preparations of witch hazel by using witch hazel bark or witch hazel leaves directly. Alcohol-free, warm water infusions are also preferred for eye washes, sitz baths, and facial steams.
Witch hazel bark is commonly used for tinctures, ointments, and gargles and should only be taken internally under professional supervision.
