Witch Hazel Leaf C/S
Witch Hazel Leaf C/S
Scientific Name: Hamamelis virginiana
Preparation: Cut & Sifted
Place of Origin: USA
Harvest Method: Wildcrafted
Common witch hazel (H. virginiana) is prized for its astringent and antiseptic properties. The small, shrubby tree is a North American native, perhaps most recognized by its thread-like yellow flowers that burst into bloom after its leaves drop in autumn.
Native Americans were the first to use the leaves, twigs, and bark of witch hazel in teas and poultices. The abundance of tannins throughout the plant have a drying, astringent effect that prevents inflammation and promotes healing for a variety of skin conditions, including minor cuts, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, and eczema.
Distilled, alcohol-based witch hazel water is readily available today, making it one of the most widely used healing herbs in the United States. Many contemporary herbalists prefer to make stronger preparations of witch hazel by using witch hazel leaves or witch hazel bark directly. Alcohol-free, warm water infusions are also preferred for eye washes, sitz baths, and facial steams.
Witch hazel leaves are commonly used in infusions and lotions, often with other skin-tending herbs like rose petals and calendula blossoms. The herb should only be taken internally under professional supervision.
