Hibiscus Flower (Whole)
Hibiscus Flower (Whole)
Scientific Name: Hibiscus sabdariffa
Preparation: Whole
Place of Origin: Egypt
Also known as roselle or roselle hibiscus, hibiscus is a robust and bushy tropical plant with showy flowers. At the base of each flower is a deep red, fleshy sheath called a calyx. Although commonly labeled as flowers, the calyx is the part of the plant that is dried and used for herbal teas. The flowers themselves are a creamy yellow with a crimson center.
Brewed alone, dried hibiscus makes an easy-to-prepare, refreshing beverage with a bright, tart flavor and beautiful red color reminiscent of cranberry. Hibiscus is a common ingredient in tea blends, and it is available as a powder for smoothies and baked goods.
Hibiscus is rich in antioxidants and vitamin C and has traditionally been used as a diuretic. Modern research suggests that hibiscus could help maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels for overall cardiovascular health.
