Black walnut trees grow wild across the Central and Eastern United States and are one of the few land plants rich in iodine, a natural antiseptic and essential mineral for thyroid health. Black walnut trees, including their leaves, also contain tannins and a compound called juglone that inhibits the growth of other nearby plants.

Combined, the tannins, juglone and natural iodine in black walnut leaves have anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. A simple infusion, extract or poultice of black walnut leaf powder may be used as a wound wash or to treat skin conditions like athlete’s foot, toenail fungus, eczema, and acne.

Black walnut leaves have the same medicinal and citrusy scent as black walnut hulls and nuts. As a tea, the flavor is mild and earthy. People with nut allergies should not use any black walnut products.
