Black Culver's Root C/S

Culver’s root, also known as Bowman’s root, black root or Culver’s physic, is an elegant plant native to North American prairies. Historically, native tribes used the plant’s taproot and rhizomes to induce vomiting in purification rituals, and it became known as a blood purifier. Culver’s root was later named for the eighteenth-century physician who promoted its use as a laxative.

While fresh Culver’s root is a powerful purgative and emetic, dried Culver’s root is less potent. Contemporary herbalists occasionally recommend small does of Culver’s root as a laxative or bitter tonic to promote bile flow and aid digestion.

Dried Culver’s root is typically prepared as a decoction, often combined with other herbs that support liver function and digestion. The taste is bitter and astringent.
