Elderberry Powder
Price Per Pound:
Black elder, which is also known by its genus Sambucus, is a tree-like shrub that blooms from June to August with star-shaped, white flowers. By autumn, the plant produces small purple-black fruits that are harvested by snipping off entire clusters of berries. Unripe berries may cause stomach upset, but when properly prepared (cooked or extract), the ripe berries are safe to eat.
Elderberry powder is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants and is a popular remedy for the common cold. As an antiviral, elderberry can significantly shorten recovery times for cold and flu symptoms, and the berry powder adds a dark, fruity flavor to recipies, extracts, syrups, and lozenges.
Traditionally, elderberries have been used to make preserves, cordials and elderberry wine — long before they became a popular herbal remedy. They are also used to make a dark blue-purple natural dye.
