Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) is a natural hybrid of spearmint and watermint that was discovered in England in 1696. While spearmint is generally considered the savory mint, peppermint is the sweet mint used for candies and desserts, herbal teas and medicines.
An aromatic herb with a slight peppery fragrance, peppermint has a high menthol content that activates cold receptors and gives a rush of coolness on contact. Both refreshing and medicinal, peppermint leaf tea can help cool a fever, and inhaling its vapors helps relieve coughs and congestion. A peppermint-infused mist or herbal bath can also help cool sunburn, bug bites and other skin irritations.
Since ancient times, mint has been used after meals to freshen breath and as a digestive aid. Today, studies show that the menthol in peppermint calms the muscles of the digestive tract, and many herbalists recommend the herb to settle an upset stomach and ease bloating.
