Wild cherry (Prunus serotina) is a deciduous tree native to North America. It produces small, edible fruits used in jams, jellies, and liquors — hence the name rum cherry — but is better known for its beautiful, reddish-brown wood and medicinal bark. Underneath the dark, rough, scaly bark of a mature tree is a lighter layer of inner bark popular in herbal cough remedies.

Wild cherry bark contains prunasin, a cyanogenic glycoside and the source of the bark’s almond-like aroma. As a relaxant and expectorant, the prunasin in wild cherry bark is thought to calm the cough reflex and clear mucus. In excessive doses, wild cherry bark is toxic, and the herbal medicine should only be used for short periods.

Cold water is typically recommended for wild cherry bark infusions, which may then be used to formulate wild cherry bark syrups or tinctures.
