Bayberry Root Bark Powder
Scientific Name: Myrica cerifera
Preparation: Powder
Place of Origin: USA
Harvest Method: Wildcrafted
Bayberry is an evergreen shrub (or small tree) found growing along the eastern coast of the United States. The aromatic plant is best known for the thick waxy coating on its berries that is used for fragrances and candles— leading to common names like candleberry, tallow shrub, and wax myrtle.
Medicinally, bayberry was used in the South by the native Choctaw tribe to treat fever. The bark of the roots is typically used, although cut and sifted bayberry tree bark is also available. Both contain myricetrin, a flavonoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce fevers, as well as astringent tannins that tighten and dry mucous membranes.
Bayberry root bark powder is often prepared as a infusion to ease symptoms of the common cold and flu. The taste is bitter and astringent. Some contemporary herbalists also recommend bayberry as a gargle for sore throats or prepare the powder as a topical paste to treat sores, ulcers, or varicose veins.
